About This Course
The West Course at Royal Melbourne stands as one of the world's great tests of golf, co-designed by Alister MacKenzie and the club's members in the 1930s. Consistently ranked among the top courses globally, this par-73 masterpiece showcases the finest elements of heathland architecture, featuring dramatic sandy bunkers, undulating greens, and strategic routing that demands precision and imagination. The West Course has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments including the Presidents Cup and multiple Australian Opens, cementing its status as one of the southern hemisphere's most significant golfing venues. Set on the outskirts of Melbourne, the course plays through native Australian vegetation and features the characteristic firm, fast greens that make Royal Melbourne so challenging. Golfers consider the West Course a true examination of skill, with multiple routes to play each hole and countless strategic decisions throughout. The course's conditioning is exceptional, with its greenstaff maintaining championship standards year-round. Every hole presents distinct character and challenge, from the opening holes that establish the course's stern test through to the closing sequence.
Signature Holes
One of the world's great par-3s: an absolute gem demanding precision from the tee. The elevated green is surrounded by dramatic bunkers, with no bailout area.
A brilliant short par-4 with multiple strategic options. The fairway is generous, but the approach to a narrow, tilted green is the challenge. Bunkers right and left frame the target.
The dramatic par-4 opening of the back nine: a long hole with a daunting approach. Massive bunkers left and right funnel the drive, and the green is lightning-quick and multi-tiered.
A formidable finishing par-4 for the back nine: uphill all the way with a severe bunker left and the green sloping away from the golfer. The approach demands a bold strike.
